 What is worth learning ?

Throughout this module it was very interesting to learn about the different ways that teachers can teach new information to their students. Through the video called 3 Curricula All Schools Teach I learned about explicit curriculum, hidden curriculum, and null curriculum. Explicit curriculum can be described as things that are formally taught, hidden is the message that is communicated, and null is the information this is missed/pushed to the side. I learned through the video Changing The World One Word At A Time that it is very important for teachers to be wary of how they teach because the things that aren't explicitly said out loud can have the most impact on students.

To make my blackout poem from the text Ending Curriculum Violence I read the text once and on the second read I focused on the key points that spoke out to me. Some examples of quotes that spoke out to me where "teachers intentions matter", "leaving queer history out of curriculum or teaching it in ways that are irresponsible is violent" and lastly "it is necessary to help prepare teachers to critically examine what curriculum violence looks like within their discipline". Overall this module helped me learn about how teachers treat students and the subliminal messages of what they choose to teach/talk about is important. Additionally, as future teachers we should take the time to analyze the important topics that we should be discussing with the class, and not shy away from topics such as black history/slavery just because it may be hard to talk about.

  1. Hello Adriana! I had never heard of the different types of curriculum taught in schools but now after the module I guess I always knew they existed in a way. From your response I now have an even better understanding of specifically hidden curriculum and I like how you simplified it to where I could understand it more. I agree with you that actions and may other things can impact students just as much as words and I have experienced this personally through out my school years. Wether it was skipping over a sensitive topic or implying something not meaning to hurtful, the damage was still done and us as future teachers have to be cautious of this. I also ready the text from ending curriculum violence multiple times and I feel like this gives a chance to actually think and process what stands out to us. The words violence, prepare, and critically examine also stood out to me. Lastly I strongly agree with you about how our group of teachers need to talk about the topics that have been labeled too sensitive or mot for the class and ask how will you incorporate these into your classroom.

    1. Hi Zion! I'm glad my blog was able to provide you with additional information about the different types of curriculum taught in school. I'm glad we're in agreeance about teachers needing to have these hard conversations and not having it be something that we shy away from as future teachers. I hope that we take that into consideration whenever we start teaching and perhaps ask other teachers that work in our schools how they go about having these hard conversations.
